The battery driver become corrupt during update process, and you need to remove and re-install it.
* Type “Device Manager” in start menu, and select it from results. Or right clcik on start menu and select Device Manager.
* Within the list of Device Manager applet, expand them and locate the “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.”. Right click on it and choose Uninstall option.
* Check for updates, and restart the system.
* Re-open Device Manager, select “Scan for hardware changes.” to get latest battery driver and install it.
Dell laptop:
* Open Control Panel, go to Power Options. On the left side pane, click on the Desktop mode battery charge option.
Or right click on the battery meter in the system tray.
* Within Battery Meter, go to Desktop mode tab, check Disabled box, and click Apply > OK button.
* Then unplug and plug the laptop back in.
HP Pavilion dm4, HP Slate500:
uninstall the battery and the charger from the device manager and then rebott and that did work.

* Repeat the 1-2 steps and return to enable them again.
